3 new bus terminals to come up, to help unclog roadsides in Gurgaon

The city may finally get three bus terminals, which will help decongest roads and streamline public transport.

Two bus terminals will come up in Sector 29 and at Rajiv Chowk, while a depot-cum-terminal has been planned in Sector 12.

The transport department has agreed to provide land for these projects. GMDA will prepare the concept plan and take up construction.

A GMDA official said, “Adequate facilities are essential to manage the fleet. While the land ownership will remain with the transport department, GMDA will design and build the terminals.” The decision was finalised at a meeting chaired by additional chief secretary (town and country planning) AK Singh on Wednesday.

State transport commissioner TL Satyaprakash, GMDA CEO Shyamal Misra, along with GMDA’s chief engineer Arun Dhankhar and mobility division’s chief general manager Col RD Singhal were present.

Officials said the concept plan will be developed by agencies. With three terminals now on the drawing board, officials said the projects will help streamline city bus operations, reduce roadside congestion and “finally give Gurgaon the bus infrastructure it has lacked for nearly two decades”.

A GMDA official said, “We will soon engage the consultant to prepare the concept plan for the bus terminal at Sector 29, which will be taken up on priority. The one at Rajiv Chowk will have charging infrastructure and Sector 12 will be a depot-cum-terminal. It has the capacity of accommodating 200 buses at a time.”

It was also agreed at the meeting that revenue from commercial establishments on the premises will be shared, with half going to the transport department.

The move comes at a time when the city road is struggling with chaotic bus halts due to the absence of a proper terminal.

At present, the city has a fleet of 150 buses, which are plying across 24 routes.

Fifty Gurgaon buses are operating in Faridabad on the orders of the state govt.

According to GMDA, it is planning to operate 900 city buses within the next few years. TOI on Tuesday reported that land earmarked near Millennium City Centre Metro station has been lying unused for years, forcing city buses to park along the road and choke traffic.

In 2007, a five-acre land parcel near Rajiv Chowk was handed over to the transport department, but no terminal was built.

In 2002, Huda (now HSVP) allotted three acres near the metro corridor, but buses still park on the roadside.

The condition of the existing Sector 12 bus stand has already deteriorated and it has been declared unsafe.

With the proposed interstate bus terminal at Sector 36A, the existing site will be handed over to GMDA for the development of bus infrastructures.
