Revamp of two arterial roads — Galleria Market and Vyapar Kendra — is likely to start by February, officials said. The project received government approval last week and GMDA officials said they will issue the work order for the same soon.

These roads, which are currently a one-way, will be converted to two-way stretches. The facelift will also include widening, strengthening and construction of footpaths and cycle tracks, and landscaping.

While the metropolitan authority has given a timeline of 12 months to complete the redevelopment work after the allotment, officials said they aim to finish the task by the end of this year.

Revamp of Galleria Market Road will cost the GMDA around 21.7 crore, while Rs 22.4 crore will be spent on the redevelopment of Vyapar Kendra Road.

Under the project, GMDA will widen the existing stretch to six lanes with the central verge allowing bi-directional traffic movement in the area.

“The project got the approval from a high-powered purchase committee, and we are soon going to allot the work to the agency. We are aiming to complete the upgradation work by the end of this year,” a senior official of GMDA said.

Several residential condominiums, plotted colonies, upscale markets, and commercial complexes are dotted along around 2.1km-long stretches, catering to huge influx of traffic. While Galleria Market Road connects Golf Course Road with August Kranti Marg, Vyapar Kendra road is a key link road catering to traffic all the way from Dwarka Expressway to Golf Course Road via Hero Honda Chowk, Subhash Chowk and Millennium City Centre junction.

The proposal to redevelop these two stretches was approved in March last year. Further, there will be development of 2.5m-wide cycle tracks, 1.8m-wide uninterrupted footpaths, provisions will also be made for parking facilities with a capacity of 533 cars on Galleria Market Road and 650 cars on Vyapar Kendra Road for both residents and visitors alike.

Gurgaon’s government announced a Haryana administrative reshuffle with the appointment of A Sreenivas as the new GMDA chief. Sreenivas, a 2004-batch IAS officer, will assume charge as the CEO of GMDA. He has previous experience in Haryana cadre and has worked on various development projects. As the new chief, Sreenivas will be responsible for improving the city’s public infrastructure. The government’s decision to appoint the same official for both MCG and GMDA has raised concerns among residents who believe it could hinder development.

The Ballari Road stretch from Devanahalli to Andhra Pradesh border of National Highway-44 will be widened into a 10-lane road, linked to the proposed Bengaluru-Chennai expressway. NHAI has taken up the upgradation of the road from Devanahalli to Kurnool, with a six-lane main carriageway and two-lane service roads. This project aims to accommodate increased traffic flow, eliminate blackspots, and reduce congestion on roads leading to Bengaluru. The Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) will connect to the widened road, providing direct access to NH-44 for trucks coming from Tumakuru Road.

Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) revives the plan to six-lane the 76km Sardar Patel Ring Road after a four-year hiatus. The road widening project estimated at Rs 200 crore aims to replace the current 8.5m lanes with 12.5m wide lanes. Auda plans to improve the drainage system, lay new storm water lines and build a walkway along the storm water line. Pedestrian safety will be enhanced with the construction of pedestrian overpasses, while existing flyovers will be upgraded to six lanes. Tree planting along the road is also part of the project. Auda’s dispute with Ahmedabad Ring Road Infrastructure Ltd (ARRIL) delayed the project until June 2021.
